MP welcomes £620k investment for Selby's flood defences

This week, the Labour government has announced a record £2.65 billion investment for over 1000 flood defences. The Selby area will be allocated funds for six key projects with the aim to better protect local communities from flooding.

Welcoming the funding announcement, Keir Mather MP said “When I first knocked on doors during the by-election in 2023, flooding came up in my conversations time and time again. Since then, I've spoken to hundreds of residents about the need for better protection from flooding and have been fighting for increased investment in local infrastructure.”

“This issue is personal for me - I know from firsthand experience just how distressing the risk of flooding and the devastation that flooding can bring to a community.” “I met with the new Flooding Minister back in September to raise the specific concerns which local people have shared with me. I'm pleased that the Minister has both listened and acted - taking proactive steps to protect our region from flooding.”

Flooding Minister Emma Hardy added “We inherited flood defences in their worst condition on record following 14 years of Conservative neglect. Through our Plan for Change, we are supporting five schemes in the Selby area, ensuring residents have the long-term protection they need.”
